APPEARANCE/COLOR: The heartwood can vary from light, to medium brown, to pale yellowish-brown or dark pale-brown, commonly with an olive cast. White to light brown sapwood isn’t always demarcated from the heartwood. White oak can have a broad range in color variation.

CLEAR GRADING RULES: Natural heartwood color variations and a small amount of contrasting sapwood, along with allowable natural wood characters. Will admit the following: Limited light-colored pin knots 1/8’’ in diameter, small burls, and thin brown streaks. 3/8’’ wide bright sapwood entire length of the piece or equivalent, if not more than 1’’ wide for 1/3 the length of the piece. The back side will admit: Occasional scant thickness and or waney edge if piece has sufficient bearing of full thickness to support it to the floor.

CHARACTER GRADING RULES: Prominent natural variations in heartwood and sapwood coloration, along with varying natural wood characters and sound knots. Will admit the following: Unlimited open knots and open characters not exceeding 1” in diameter that will fill readily. Unlimited pin worm holes, checks, heavy streaks, mineral streaks, and sapwood. Sapwood may be stained, blotchy or speckled. The back side will admit: Occasional scant thickness and or waney edge if piece has sufficient bearing of full thickness to support it to the floor.
